The first four months of 2011 have been very busy for Grand Harbour Marina., according to the company and between January and April there were bookings for the berthing of 11 superyachts. Another three superyachts are expected to enter the marina in the coming weeks.

“Eleven might seem a small number but in truth, we are effectively speaking of superyachts and economically speaking, superyachts are amongst the most lucrative source for the local economy,” said Ben Stuart, the marina’s general manager. “Over and above the economic figures, this is about hosting some of the most impressive boats who are usually sailing round the world.”

Seventy five meter long M / Y Anastasia and M / Y Samar which is 77 meters long, are two such superyachts which are regular visitors at Grand Harbour Marina. Other superyachts currently berthed in Vittoriosa are Spirit of Bowfish (30m), Bikini Queen (38m), Lola D (32m), Grand Cru (36.10m), Deep Blue (43.80m), Daniella (33.50m), Southwind (40m), Illusion (40.47m), Areti (36m) and Meamina (59m).

“Compared to the other boats with a permanent berth, these superyachts are acknowledged as quite sizeable and which would require particular marina requirements not only to logistically be able to berth but also with regards to the ancillary services that they would need throughout their berthing period.

“Boats of this size are usually berthed along the main quay underneath Fort St Angelo, the quay reserved for the bigger superyachts. In fact ours is the only marina which is fully-equipped to cater for the largest superyachts that can sometimes reach a length of up to 120 meters. Having boats of this size constantly visiting us confirms Grand Harbour Marina as a leading destination in Malta and the Mediterranean,” said Mr Stuart.
