The nurses’ union has welcomed a partial agreement reached with the Health Department on indemnity insurance for nurses.

Through the agreement, the government could only request refunds when voluntary damages or gross negligence amounting to recklessness were proven, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses said.

In a statement, the union said the government would assume responsibility for civil liability in claims for damages against nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals in government employment while carrying out their professional duties in the public service.

The union said there still remained the issue of criminal procedures that might be initiated following a magisterial or police inquiry.

Further meetings are to be held with the government to discuss the issue of a reasonable fee for legal assistance.
