A 29-year-old inmate was yesterday sentenced to another five months in prison and fined €600 after he admitted helping four young men buy cannabis almost 11 years ago.
In May 2004, Johan Calleja was approached by the youngsters who asked where they could buy cannabis from. He took them to Cospicua where he met a dealer, handed him €23 given to him by the youngsters, and got a small amount of drugs in return, which he handed over to the four.
Mr Calleja cooperated with police, named the person he bought the drugs from and also admitted trafficking cannabis and being in possession of cannabis and heroin.
Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras noted that Mr Calleja had been convicted of several crimes since, including drug possession and theft. He was serving time in prison and was set for release in November 2017.
The magistrate also highlighted his personal background and pointed out that when he left Corradino Correctional Facility he would have no relatives to go home to because his parents and sister were all dead.
She therefore called on the prison director to ensure that, on his release, Mr Calleja would have the necessary support to reintegrate into society.
A probation officer testified that Mr Calleja had a drug problem but recent urine tests showed he was clean.
The magistrate placed Mr Calleja under the care of a probation officer for three years to ensure he was being monitored when the time came for him to leave prison.
