A Venezuelan man who was yesterday supposed to be released from jail will remain behind bars after it turned out that he is wanted by the Italian authorities.

Diego Rugeri, 38, who was living in Trapani, Sicily, arrived on the island on February 27.

He was charged with using false documents and sentenced to prison. He had spent two-and-half months inside but, before being released, he was taken to court on the strength of a request by a magistrate in Trapani who said he had breached bail conditions in a pending case. There was no information on what the case is about.

Mr Rugeri, who was represented by lawyer Steve Tonna Lowell, told Magistrate Doreen Clarke that he was contesting the extradition order. He was remanded in custody. Police Inspectors Mario Cuschieri and Edel Mary Camilleri prosecuted.
