A Libyan prisoner was yesterday charged with setting fire to his cell and trying to torch a second a few days later when he also allegedly bit a warder on the hand.

Faiz Omar Elsallak, 42, pleaded not guilty to burning cell 13 in division six on Sunday and then trying to set fire to cell 11 in division 13 on Wednesday.

He was also charged with attacking and violently resisting prison warders Kevin Cauchi, Carmel Cauchi, Raymond Cutajar, Victor Galea and Stephen Camilleri, threatening them and slightly injuring Mr Cauchi, harassing them and relapsing.

Defence lawyer Joe Brincat appeared for Mr Elsallak.
