A port worker injured at the Malta Freeport was yesterday awarded more than €47,000 in damages.

Joseph Bonanno filed his action against Malta Freeport Terminals Ltd. He told the court he was injured while tying containers together on the vessel MV Rabat, which was at the Freeport in Kalafrana in December 2007.

He was securing containers to ensure they did not move while the ship was in motion.

Mr Bonanno said he had not been given the correct lashing rods as required by safe working practices and he consequently sustained an injury to his right hand and a permanent disability.

In yesterday’s judgment, Mr Justice Silvio Meli said the Freeport did not supply Mr Bonanno with the correct tools for the job and that the company was responsible for him even though he was not its employee.

The court ruled that Mr Bonanno had suffered a two per cent permanent disability and ordered the Freeport to pay him €47,061 in damages.
