A 17-year-old Somali immigrant yesterday admitted in court to leaving Malta illegally, catching a ferry to Sicily and travelling up through Germany before making his way to Dublin, Ireland.

The teenager, who is not being named because of his age, left the island with false travel documents.

The Irish authorities found him and sent him back to Malta where he appeared in court yesterday.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale sentenced him to four months behind bars suspended for two years.
