The government aims to have given free IVF treatment at Mater Dei Hospital to 130 couples by the end of the year, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne said.

Answering a PQ from MP Anthony Agius Decelis, Mr Fearne said the first 30 couples had started last month and success had already been registered.

He had originally told Claudio Grech (PN) that last year the government had paid for 28 IVF cycles carried out by the private sector following the first phase of screening and stimulation.

Six women had become pregnant and three had delivered.
