The chairman of the Institute of Tourism Studies, Ernest Azzopardi, has stepped down, citing personal reasons, Times of Malta has learnt.

Dr Azzopardi, a senior lecturer at the University of Malta and Junior College, had been appointed just a few weeks after the last general election in 2013.

The Tourism Ministry said Dr Azzopardi and the board of governors had resigned when the new Tourism Minister was appointed last April, as per practice.

Dr Azzopardi asked not to be reappointed and the board was expected to be announced in the coming days, it said.

The members of the ITS board of governors were tourism lecturer Alfred Quintano, Charles Martin, Michelle Muscat Portelli, Carlo Micallef, Joseph Bonello, Carmela Said and Adrian Grech Cumbo.
