A Polish software developer was yesterday given a three-month jail term suspended for a year after he pushed a woman in the sea.

Wiktor Edmund Depta, 31, who lives in St Julian’s, pleaded guilty to threatening and attacking Kathleen Mary Cassar and Nuket Karatas Gray and damaging the latter’s iPhone 5.

The incident happened in St Julian’s on Saturday at about 9.45am. Mr Depta was asked by Magistrate Anthony Vella whether he was aware of what he was being accused of.

After reading the charge sheet, Mr Depta, who paid for the mobile phone’s damages, said the charges brought against him were serious and what he had done was only meant to be a joke.

At first he only pleaded guilty of damaging the phone, adding that what he had done was a terrible joke but insisted he had not intended to insult or hurt anyone.

He then apologised for the incident and pleaded guilty. Police inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted.
