A married couple were yesterday jailed for six years and fined €23,000 each after admitting to trafficking in ecstasy four years ago.

Robert and Pauline Cilia were caught on May 25, 2008, with 1,000 ecstasy pills in their Fiat Uno after buying them from a Dutchman.

The couple, together with another man, Jeffrey Zammit, decided to start selling the pills, the Attorney General said in the bill of indictment.

The police caught them in a car park in Naxxar and found the pills in their vehicle. In a subsequent search of their home the police found a further 38 ecstasy pills and 0.07 grams of cocaine.

The couple were due to stand trial by jury but managed to plea bargain with the Attorney General before admitting the charges.

They pleaded guilty to conspiring to traffic in drugs, trafficking and being in possession of the drug that denotes it was not for their exclusive use.

Mr Justice Michael Mallia jailed them after taking into consideration the plea bargain.
