The hunters’ federation yesterday filed a judicial protest complaining that the Prime Minister had not yet opened the autumn season for trapping unprotected birds leading to serious suffering for its members.

The Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FKNK) said it was formally requesting the Prime Minister to declare the season open. According to the Malta Ornis committee, it should have been opened on September 1 until January 10.

The four species that can be trapped are turtle doves, quails, golden plovers and song thrushes.

In the protest, the FKNK said trappers had paid or renewed their trapping licence and they were now suffering damages, adding that they have been suffering and will also suffer “serious prejudicial damages” because of this situation.
