Mark Mifsud Bonnici’s rather disingenuous letter about bird shooting in Scotland (September 20) ignores one vital point. In Great Britain, birds are specifically bred for the shoot. Indigenous wild fowl are left to breed and exist in peace.

In Malta, hunters destroy wild migratory birds, damaging the ecosystem in the process.

Unfortunately for Mr Mifsud Bonnici and his fellow hunters, they have no hope of ever convincing anyone with even the remotest interest in the environment that wanton destruction of wild animals can ever be considered to be a civilised pursuit. A lack of honesty in public comment simply confirms opinion that this destructive and hopelessly out of date behaviour should be outlawed as soon as possible.
