A man who lost an eye in a hunting accident in Egypt was yesterday awarded over €250,000 in damages by Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco sitting in the First Hall of the Civil Court.

Raymond Sammut told the court he was shot in the eye by fellow hunter Anthony Micallef during the hunting trip in the winter of 1997. He lost sight in that eye as a result.

The court had concluded that Mr Micallef was primarily to blame for the accident as he had fired his shotgun at a low angle and had not taken the proper precautions. However, the court found that Mr Sammut had shouldered one-fourth of the responsibility for the accident.

The court yesterday awarded Mr Sammut €284,648.95 in damages after taking into consideration his income and the loss of eyesight.
