Between December 1956 and May 1957, more than 35,000 Hungarian refugees were transported aboard US flights and on board various ships from Europe to America to escape the terror that followed the Hungarian uprising against the Russian domination.
There is no way of condoning what the Russians did to the Hungarian people in the 1950s, just as there is no way of condoning the Hungarian government’s stance in the current refugee crisis as it hides behind EU laws and regulations to escape from its humanitarian obligations.
