More than 27 towns and villages in Malta and Gozo suffered a power cut early yesterday morning because of a fault in the old part of the Delimara power station.

Electricity went off at about 8.25am morning after Unit 1 “suffered a trip which caused load shedding in some parts of Malta,” a spokeswoman for Enemalta said when contacted.

Among the areas affected were Birżebbuga, Marsaxlokk, Swatar, Msida, Birkirkara, San Ġwann, Kappara, Swieqi, Żejtun, Marsascala, Għaxaq, Marsa, Qormi, Żebbuġ, Paola, Fgura, Senglea, Cospicua, Pembroke, Mellieħa, St Paul’s Bay, Mġarr, areas near Rabat, St Julian’s, Mad-liena, Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, Sliema and Gozo.

The power started being restored after 45 minutes and all areas had power back by about 10am, the spokeswoman said. The engineers’ priority was to restore power and the cause of the fault was being investigated, she added.

The old part of the Delimara power station, known as Phase One, will be closed down under the Government’s energy plan.
