Three of Whitney Houston’s best-known hits are back in the UK’s top 40 following the star’s death.

The British public is demonstrating its love of Whitney, just as it did for Amy Winehouse last year and Michael Jackson in 2009

I Will Always Love You hit number 14 in the official singles chart, while I Wanna Dance With Somebody went in at number 20 and One Moment In Time was in the number 40 spot.

The singer, who was buried in Newark, New Jersey, on Sunday, was found dead in the bath in her hotel room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

Some 200,000 of her records were bought last week, with 127,000 singles and more than 73,000 of her albums purchased from online and in shops around the UK.

There were 23 individual tracks in Sunday’s top 200 and 13 per cent of tracks in the top 100 feature the late singer. Official Charts Company managing director, Martin Talbot, said: “The tragic death of Whitney Houston came as a shock to her friends, colleagues and music fans across the world.

“Again, the British public is demonstrating its love of Whitney, just as it did for Amy Winehouse last year and Michael Jackson in 2009.” Ms Houston, 48, was buried next to her father John at a brief private ceremony on Sunday.

Fans and onlookers watched as her coffin was driven in a gold hearse with red and white roses placed on the roof, with family and close following behind in cars of the same colour.

It came after some of the biggest names in the music industry came together to bid an emotional farewell to the singer at her funeral service at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark.

Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, R Kelly and a host of gospel stars performed during the three-hour and 45-minute-long ceremony, while actor Kevin Costner fought back tears as he gave a moving eulogy.

Not only have sales of Ms Houston’s singles and albums rocketed, her 1992 film The Bodyguard made a re-entry on the Official Video Chart at number nine. Several of the star’s songs which feature on The Bodyguard soundtrack have also re-entered the Official Singles Chart Top 100 this weekend.

The film’s lead single I Will Always Love You is at number 14, while I Have Nothing is at 44, and Run To You is at 67.
