Security personnel caught a man trying to force his way into a hotel room, a court heard yesterday.

Silvio Camilleri, 29, from Gżira, was found trying to break into St Georges Complex in Paceville from the balcony after taking items from another room in the same hotel.

Mr Camilleri said he had worked as a pizzaiolo for a week but was on trial when he was arrested, Police Inspector Trevor Micallef told Magistrate Doreen Clarke.

Oana Seres, a Romanian, testified that she had arrived on Friday and went to exchange money. She found her room’s door wide open when she returned.

She said her husband’s Nikon D90 camera, worth £1,400, (€1,625) an iPad and medicine in a backpack were among the items stolen.

Ms Seres wanted to ask the accused if he could at least return her driver’s licence and ID card.

However, the magistrate said she could not as he had the right to remain silent. Mr Camilleri was remanded in custody.
