The first hotel group to implement a water-saving programme recommended by the Malta Business Bureau will be saving enough water a year to irrigate 15,000 trees for three years.

2,669,000 litres of water will be saved every year

The Corinthia group has taken on board the advice of the EU Life+ Investing in Water Project coordinated by the Malta Business Bureau, supported by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association.

The project partnership was launched earlier this year to help businesses cut their water utility bills by seeking solutions that cut consumption.

Corinthia is the first hotel group to adopt the water-saving solutions and save 2,669,000 litres of water every year, enough to water all the trees at the Foresta 2000 site for three years.

During a visit by Tourism Minister Mario de Marco at the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Attard, chief financial officer Paul Bugeja said that all 600 rooms and the back-of-house areas were being fitted with water restrictors, which suppressed excessive water flow.

The investment will pay off in one year at the St George’s and Marina hotels and within six months at the Corinthia in San Anton.

The hotels are also planning on replacing most of the bathroom shower heads with more efficient ones, helping them save an additional eight million litres of water a year.

Free water-saving solutions can now also be identified through a self-assessment tool for enterprise introduced this week on the MBB website.

To use the tool, users enter water consumption data and receive an analysis. Water-saving solutions are recommended and the quantity and cost of water that could be saved is indicated.
