Yet again we have been presented with allegations of bribery, corruption and scandals involving politicians, businessmen, footballers, etc. and not only in Malta but worldwide.

As the Good Book informs us, power can and does corrupt. Human nature is such that we may well continue in our devious schemes until we are found out.

Then and only then do we, firstly, make so many excuses and justifications and, as time goes by, repent and eat humble pie.

If our belief in God is sincere as one would expect it to be from church-goers, then our Christian conscience should alert us. Otherwise we are living a lie.

God is not mocked by our inner motives.

Let us all examine our hearts to ensure we are not more concerned in lining our own pockets and advancing our own careers.

Sooner or later, this will come back to haunt us.

I am reminded of the wonderful prayer: “Be with us at the hour of our deaths”. I have witnessed this in many and I pray it will be our experience too.

To our politicians, especially at this election time, I say: please examine your true motives for the overall benefit of all Maltese citizens; resist making false promises to ensure a handful of votes.
