Fabio Mangiacasale has played his last match for Sliema Wanderers who have agreed to terminate the Italian forward’s contract after he became homesick.

Mangiacasale, who played the full 90 minutes in his team’s 2-1 victory over Pietà on Sunday, joined the Wanderers at the start of the season but, after failing to settle in Malta, asked the club to release him from his contract so that he can return home.

The Blues have decided to accept Mangiacasale’s request and the former Melfi and Catanzaro player was expected to fly back to Italy today.

Mangiacasale, 27, has scored three goals for the Blues in the Premier League.

While Mangiacasale has cut short his spell with Sliema, fellow countryman Stefano Bianciardi has no plans to leave the BOV Premier League club after extending his contract for another two years.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers are set to give a trial to striker Demba Toure.

The Blues, sixth in the championship with 22 points, are looking to strengthen their forward line.

Toure, who played for Birkirkara and Tarxien Rainbows last season, is now on the books of Pembroke Athleta but has only managed to find the net once for the Division One leaders.

Mangiacasale’s exit and the absence of Malta striker Michael Mifsud, who has been out since suffering a leg injury in December, have seriously diminished coach Stephen Azzopardi’s attacking options.

Sources have told Times of Malta that French striker Guy Kassa Gnabouyou may also leave the club during this month’s transfer window.

Sliema are also expected to give trials to a striker from Nigeria and one from Ivory Coast as their search for an adequate replacement for Stanley Ohawuchi continues.
