Workers at the Sa Maison home for the elderly are being abused and employed under precarious working conditions, the General Workers’ Union claimed yesterday.

The name-and-shame policy was convincing more workers to come forward

The union said workers at the retirement home were not being paid overtime for extra hours they worked and were not being allowed to take sick leave.

The union further claimed that workers were only being granted leave in exceptional cases and some of them were not even bound by any contract, in breach of employment laws.

It said this was not an isolated case and its name-and-shame policy was convincing more workers to come forward and express their frustration at their precarious working conditions.

The union said it was currently investigating the reports it had received and will be taking action if these were confirmed, reporting them to the Director of Employment and Industrial Relations for him to investigate too.

But a spokesman for the retirement home hit back saying the union had not verified the allegations it had received and that it was seeking legal advice on how to proceed.
