Holland’s World Cup hangover continues to linger and they remain off the pace in their bid to qualify for Euro 2016 after a 2-0 loss in Iceland, last night.

The Scandinavians – boosted by a Gylfi Sigurdsson brace – have nine points from nine in Group A and sit alongside the Czech Republic, who also have a 100 per cent record after a 4-2 win away at Kazakhstan.

Holland have three points, with their first ever loss to Iceland arriving after an opening defeat to the Czechs.

The expanded version of the next Euro Championships mean they remain alive in their bid to qualify, but their form – on the back of a World Cup semi-final – suggests they will have a job on their hands to make up the gap.

The night will go down in Icelandic football history and gives the clearest signal yet that they are ready for a major tournament after nearly going to the World Cup.

Bosnia and Belgium drew 1-1 in an entertaining Group B qualifier after midfielder Radja Nainggolan cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s first-half opener for the Balkan nation.

A clinical strike by Dzeko gave Bosnia the lead against the run of play before Nainggolan equalised thanks to a blunder by keeper Asmir Begovic, who had kept his team afloat in the first half.

The result left the Belgians on four points from two games after their opening 6-0 home rout of Andorra while Bosnia have two points from three matches following a 2-1 home defeat by Cyprus and a 0-0 draw at Wales.

The Welsh continued their unbeaten start to the Euro 2016 campaign as a nervy 2-1 win over Cyprus, after they had been reduced to 10 men, bolstered the nation’s dream of qualifying for a major championship for the second time.

Two first-half goals from substitute David Cotterill and Hal Robson-Kanu put the home side on the way to a victory which sees them lead Group B with seven points and will feed the idea that Chris Coleman’s team could emulate the 1958 Welsh side, which played in the World Cup in Sweden.

In Group H, Ivan Perisic scored a first-half brace as Croatia made it three wins out of three as they claimed a comfortable 6-0 victory over Azerbaijan at home.

Andrej Kramaric opened the scoring for the hosts before substitute Perisic headed home his double and Marcelo Brozovic made it 4-0 at the break.

Luka Modric powered home a 56th-minute penalty and an own goal from Rashad Farhad Sadygov made it six.

The win means maximum points for Group H leaders Croatia, level on points with Italy.
