A man was yesterday jailed for six years for carrying out a hold-up on a jewellery shop in St Paul’s Bay earlier last week.

Peter Camilleri, 43, of St Paul’s Bay, pleaded guilty to stealing from Super Gold Jewellery in Pioneers Road on Thursday at around 1pm.

He stole an estimated €20,000 worth of jewellery when he walked into the shop brandishing a large knife. He ordered the sales girl to put jewellery in a bag and ran off.

However, people from a neighbouring shop recognised him despite the fact that he was wearing a mask and sunglasses.

He pleaded guilty to theft, holding the sales girl against her will, holding a knife without a police licence and breaching bail conditions. Magistrate Giovanni Grixti jailed him for six years.

Police Inspectors James Grech and Edmond Cuschieri prosecuted.
