The byzantine icon of the Blessed Virgin of ‘the Victory’, said to have been donated by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt to the church of Our Lady of Victory, Valletta, has been restored and now hangs again in the church.

The icon, with its delicately painted copper face and finely engraved silver riza, was badly tarnished through exposure to harsh light and its protective wooden niche had deteriorated and was infested by woodworms.

The restoration of the art treasures in Victory church is part of a conservation programme undertaken by Din l-Art Ħelwa.
