Spazju Kreattiv is showing award-winning Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s highly-acclaimed The Other Side of Hope. This original comedy-drama recounts the unlikely friendship between a travelling salesman-turned-restaurateur and a Syrian refugee whose sister goes missing on the Balkan migration route.

The auteur’s signature deadpan humour is as on point as always, highlighting serious contemporary realities with style, wit and heart.

Khaled (Sherwan Haji) flees war-torn Syria only to find himself caught up in the bureaucracy of a detention centre. As Khaled prefers to take his chances on the streets, Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) leaves his alcoholic wife to start a new life. Their chance encounter sets off a journey into a new world, where they help each other to navigate a dubious present.

With a rockabilly soundtrack and Kaurismäki’s poker-faced direction, The Other Side of Hope is at once hilarious and human – a critique of the institutions that still greet vulnerable modern-day asylum seekers in Europe.

The screening will take place tomorrow at 8.30pm at St James Cavalier. Other screenings are scheduled for Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 20. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org/en/event/the-other-side-of-hope-2017.
