I refer to the editorial ‘Cooler summer for football clubs’ (August 1).

Having worked in sports management for many years and having also been involved in football, I can say that the proposal to change Malta’s football season totally misses the point on all counts.

All European countries play their domestic league games between July/August and May, with or without a longer winter break.

What makes a team more competitive in international football is the improvement of coaching and facilities at ‘root’ level and making local clubs more popular.

The most talented footballers should have the opportunity to play in foreign leagues, raising their standards and, as a result, perform better when joining the national team.

I notice that this newspaper promotes football and other sports quite well. However, I struggled to see any reports about the world water polo championship in Budapest, the matches and medal winners.

Is it possible this newspaper’s journalists or indeed readers are not interested in the top water polo competition in the world?
