Paola Hibs Candy started the new volleyball season on a high after winning the women’s Super Cup for the ninth consecutive year earlier this month.

Just three days after lifting the pre-season John Bugeja Cup, the Paolites overcame a stern chal-lenge from PlayVolley Toyota to claim the official curtain-raiser of the 2012-13 campaign.

The first set saw Hibs dominate the early proceedings.

They opened a comfortable lead and preserved it to win the set without much trouble.

PlayVolley, however, pushed hard on their service as the second set got underway. That stance won them several points to move 24-17 in front.

But Hibs were not finished yet and some effective service play and blocking got them back in it.

PlayVolley were stunned and Hibs went on to clinch the set.

The third set was very similar to the second as PlayVolley opened a 10-point lead, 15-5, only for Hibs to click into gear and cancel out their deficit before sealing a resounding 3-0 win.
