A contract the Munxar local council awarded to a company that had a councillor among its subcontractors will be revoked.

Before awarding the contract in March, the council had consulted the Department of Local Government, which gave its go-ahead. However, Local Government Parliamentary Secretary José Herrera said yesterday he believed such advice went against the spirit of the law.

He asked the director of local government to publish guidelines on the matter, adding that the law would be changed to remove any possibility of interpretation. The amendments, he said, would be enacted by September.

Earlier this week, St Paul’s Bay local council was also instructed to revoke a similar decision. The council had agreed to award the contract for works manager to a councillor, who pledged to resign after getting the job.
