It’s summer, and that’s official. How do we recognise this season in Gozo? By closing the main road (the only ‘main road’ on the island)between the harbour and the capital.

I honestly cannot remember a single midsummer when, after standing idle all year, Maltese workmen have not closed this road. This year they have exceeded all expectations, by closing the main thoroughfares to the major beaches, too.

The Ministry of Gozo, the Transport Department and the Tourism Ministry presumably think this is the way to attract more visitors every year.

It’ll be reopened briefly for Santa Marija, to keep the south islanders quiet. Then closed again, so that foreigners can learn more about the narrow and dusty back streets and by-ways of the island.

’Twas ever thus.
