My path crossed Helen’s path in 1998 when she had just resigned from her job at Zammit Clapp Hospital, and shortly after, I took over her role.
She had been a great help to me during the transition. Since then both as nursing manager at Zammit Clapp Hospital and as chairwoman of Hospice Malta, I learnt to appreciate her standards of clinical governance and her kindness and willingness to help others.
Helen was one of the founders of both Zammit Clapp Hospital and Hospice Malta. It is safe to say that she was instrumental in introducing quality care in Malta. Her standards of care were impeccable and her leadership style was so charismatic that staff who worked with her when the hospital opened in 1991 continued to praise and respect her many years after.
The large attendance of staff and ex-staff of Zammit Clapp Hospital at her funeral confirms this. It is, to a great extent, thanks to her that Zammit Clapp Hospital and now Karin Grech Rehabilitation Hospital and Hospice Malta are based on such a strong foundation of quality care delivery, which compares only with the best.
She was a determined lady with clear objectives and will not be easily forgotten. I would like to convey, on a personal level as well as on behalf of Hospice Malta and the now Karin Grech Rehabilitation Hospital, my condolences to her husband and her two sons. Great lady, great loss.
