When 22-year-old Tom Frankenburg was dumped by his girlfriend, he wanted to soften the blow of his heartache by giving away the holiday to Malta that he had booked with her.

His story made headlines in several newspapers abroad and his online video, asking people to nominate friends who deserve a holiday, went viral with more than 100,000 views.

A month on, and 2,000 e-mails later from people all over the world, he has decided to pass on his holiday to a couple who went through a mugging trauma.

The holiday, from July 3 to July 10, includes return flights to Malta from East Midlands Airport, a stay at a four-star hotel and car rental. Mr Frankenburg even chipped in towards the £35 charges for changing the names on the plane tickets.

But as they say, one good turn deserves another. Having put Malta on the map and in recognition of his kind act, Mr Frankenburg, from Nottingham, was in for a surprise: the Malta Tourism Authority and Air Malta have joined forces to give him and a friend of his a holiday over here. Apart from free flights and accommodation, he will also get the chance to go backstage at the MTV concert and meet the stars.

“This was never about me. I did it because, otherwise, the holiday would have gone to waste,” said Mr Frankenburg.

He said he decided to give away his holiday because “we live in a broken world – a place where people get hurt, where war happens, where equality just doesn’t exist,” adding that he wanted “to fix it”.

He chose to give his holiday away to a young couple who had been mugged close to their own home. The man was left in a coma and was hospitalised for three months, but they have decided to move on and learn from the terrible trauma. In fact the girl is about to read for a PhD at university focusing on the possibility of changing young people’s attitude towards groups “which they see different from themselves”.

Mr Frankenburg said it had been a difficult choice as there had been another four couples who had been through a difficult time and also deserved a holiday. He urged people to donate money to make this possible by clicking on http://tinyurl.com/bt7de6u .

“Let’s go out and together do good things,” he said.

A new video website, http://thisismalta.tv , will be documenting Mr Frankenburg’s trip to Malta. It has also announced a series of competition prizes linked to the aim of encouraging people to “Do something nice”.
