Health Minister Joe Cassar called on EU ministers to set up a special fund to compensate countries, including Malta, for the cost of health care services and medicines for illegal migrants.

The fund, which would be set up at EU level, would compensate member states for the “added burden on their health care services including the costs of medicines to treat this vulnerable population”, the ministry said in a statement.

Dr Cassar was speaking during an Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs council meeting that took place in Luxemburg on Monday.
