The nativity scene in St George’s square in Valletta and the Mary Angels choir were the backdrop to the launch of the Milied Flimkien campaign by the nation’s leaders yesterday evening.

President George Abela, accompanied by his wife, appealed to the Maltese people to safeguard the family unit. “Christmas is not about gifts but about sharing inner joy,” he said.

Archbishop Paul Cremona had words of comfort: “Remember we are not alone – God’s son is always with us.”

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat accompanied by his wife and children, and Opposition leader Simon Busuttil appealed for solidarity and thanked Dr Abela, whose tenure ends in April, for giving the presidency an injection of energy.

The Mary Angels choir entertained the gathered crowd with Maltese Christmas carols.
