A man who harassed his former sister-in-law was yesterday jailed for 12 months, fined €5,000 and banned from contacting her in any way after the court heard how he had repeatedly threatened her.

Julian Genovese, 52, from Qawra, was found guilty of phoning Maria Cauchi from prison in September while he was under preventative custody and threatening her.

After he was released he went to her place of work and threatened her again, the court heard.

Magistrate Ian Farrugia said he noted the very real fear in Ms Cauchi as she testified.

In jailing him the magistrate also placed Ms Cauchi under a protection order for three years that will commence when Mr Genovese gets out of prison.
