George Debono, who managed the establishment of HSBC Malta’s first Premier Centre on the island, has been named the bank’s head of international banking.

Mr Debono, who brings 17 years’ experience in financial services to the role, will also be responsible for the management of HSBC’s International Banking Centre. This unit services international clientele with an expert team providing banking services to corporate clients registered overseas which are seeking to expand or to relocate to Malta.

Mr Debono has held senior management roles within HSBC’s personal banking, risk, and commercial banking areas.

In 2005, he was entrusted with the implementation of group credit systems before moving to relationship management within the bank’s commercial banking department.

He also managed the setting up of the HSBC Premier Centre in Swieqi, the first in Malta.

“This appointment brings valuable expertise and talent to HSBC Malta’s international business – a core proposition connecting our customers to other business customers in HSBC Group and to financial products and services they require for international success,” HSBC Malta’s head of commercial banking Michel Cordina said.

Mr Debono said he was looking forward to the challenges of the new role and to lead a team looking to build on HSBC’s ever-growing range of financial solutions, expertise, and extensive business connectivity across the globe.
