Francesca Borg has just qualified as an international Brevet judge in artistic gymnastics after attending a one-week course staged in Nicosia and conducted by world body FIG in conjunction with the Cyprus Gymnastics Federation.

This is the second time that Borg had participated in this course. She gained her first Category Four badge in 2009 but all judges are assessed every four years to renew their licence.

Borg, who hails from the GymStars Club, is the first Maltese official to reach this level on the judging panel. She started her career as an official when still 15 after attending a course conducted by British tutors in Malta.

At 17, she qualified as a regional judge before getting promoted to national judge along with others from the local federation.

In Cyprus, the course was conducted by Donatella Sacchi, first vice-president of the international federation.

Borg had excellent results in her practical and got promoted to Brevet judge Category Two. She is now qualified to officiate in big-scale competitions such as the World and European Championships and the Mediterranean Games, Island Games and ISF World Games.

In her days on the mat, Borg, now a director at GymStars Club, represented Malta at the Monaco GSSE in 2007. She is a former national champion and took part in various competitions outside the country.

Borg holds the position of deputy Technical Director within the Malta Gymnastics Federation. She has also been involved in the organisation of various events including the National Championships and the GymStars International which is hosted by GymStars in Tarxien.
