A Guinean man allegedly caught with almost a kilo of cannabis grass in his suitcase on his arrival from Sicily pleaded not guilty to possessing and importing the drug.

Mamadi Keita, 26, tried to escape when he was stopped by immigration police at the sea terminal in Marsa on Thursday morning. He also tried to get rid of his suitcase.

He pleaded not guilty to conspiring to import, importing and being in possession of drugs not for his personal use.

He was refused bail and remanded in custody.
