Gudja failed to keep up the pace with Gżira United at the top of the standings after a goalless draw with Luqa.

They are now joint second, four points behind the Maroons who beat Sta Venera Lightnings 2-1 last weekend.

This was a welcome result for Luqa who were coming from two successive defeats and now find themselves in a better part of the grid with nine points.

The first 45 minutes were highly motivated with both teams venturing forward but none managing to penetrate the opposing defence.

The first real chance went Gudja’s way but Bonello’s shot went incredibly high over the crossbar from a good position.

Luqa went close to an opener when Baldacchino’s effort from outside the box skimmed the woodwork.

The second period saw both teams opting for prudence even though Gudja had two good chances midway through the half when from a cross by Cutajar, Milutinovic’s header sailed just over and a Bugeja shot, which seemed destined to hit the net, was saved in style by goalkeeper Psaila.

The last opportunity of the match was created by Luqa.

After bursting through the Gudja rearguard, including the goalkeeper, Baldacchino saw his grounder cleared from over the line.

This was the third consecutive drawn result for Gudja following the stalemates against Gżira and Mellieħa in their previous matches.

It seems that after such an en-couraging start, Gudja are now lacking confidence and finding it harder to win matches than they did earlier on in the season.
