This top-of-the-table clash failed to produce a goal as leaders Gudja United and promotion chasers Gżira cancelled each other in a goalless draw at the Centenary Stadium yesterday.

Gudja have now moved one point clear of St Andrew’s at the top of the standings while Gżira have joined the Saints in second place on the 29-point mark.

Gudja were the better side early on and on 24 minutes Joselito tried his luck from the distance but goalkeeper Anthony Curmi was alert to block his effort.

Three minutes later Peter Taiye Oladotun beat the Saints offside trap but the onrushing Curmi thwarted the Gudja striker. George Chircop was first to the rebound but lobbed the ball over.

Gżira responded on the half hour when Moises Avila Perez’s free-kick finished just over.

On 33 minutes a Ryan Dalli effort from outside the area finished high and wide.

On the restart, Gżira missed a good opportunity when on 53 minutes Aquilina and Meilak failed to connect to the ball from routine distance.

On 69 minutes Joselito picked Oladotun but his header finished inches wide.

From then on both teams opted for a prudent approach as they were happy to take a point from the match.
