The first legs of the home-and-away Champions League group ties, in which the same two teams face each other on successive matchdays, will be played next week.

Last season, only three doubles were achieved by English teams in the competition, starting from the group phase to the semi-finals.

The doubles were recorded by Chelsea − quarter-final against Benfica, Manchester City − group phase against Villarreal, and Manchester United − group phase against Otelul Galati (Romania).

Group B
Arsenal: P2, W2, D0, L0, Gls 5-2, Pts 6.

Away vs Montpellier 2-1 (Podolski, Gervinho).
Home vs Olympiakos 3-1 (Gervinho, Podolski, Ramsey).

Next Wednesday, Arsenal will be striving to stretch their im-pressive home record in encounters with German clubs as they play Schalke, second in the group with four points.

1970-71 (Fairs Cup QF) Cologne 2-1.
1996-97 (UEFA Cup first round) Borussia M’gladbach 2-3.

The Citizens appear to be following the same route as last season when they failed to progress from the group phase.

Their next two matches against Ajax, who are bottom, must be won. On Wednesday, City travel to Amsterdam for the first tie.

This will be City’s first Euro encounter with Ajax.

Group E
Chelsea: P2, W1, D1, L0, Gls 6-2, Pts 4.

Home vs Juventus 2-2 (Oscar 2).
Chelsea surrendered a 2-0 lead as game progressed.

Chelsea will be on their travels to Donetsk next week to play Shakhtar. The side from Ukraine, who held Juventus to a draw in Turin, have four points.

This will be the first meeting for Chelsea with an Ukrainian side.

Shakhtar have a proud record against English sides:

2000-01 (Champions League group) Arsenal-Shakhtar: home 3-2, away 0-3 (three points).

Home vs Benfica 0-0.
Away vs Spartak Moscow 3-2 (Hooper, Komarov, Samaras).

Victory in Moscow was Celtic’s first away in group stage matches after 19 attempts.

That win set up Celtic for a double header against Barcelona, starting at Camp Nou next Tuesday.

Celtic played Barcelona four times before. Their only favourable occasion was in 2002-03, in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup, eliminating the Catalans 1-0 on aggregate.
