Team Greens resumed their international programme of races in Skyros, Greece, where the UCI World Tour qualifiers were held.

The race was a 20km time trial on Friday and a 110km road race on Sunday.

Team Greens was represented by Etienne Bonello, James Mifsud, Marie Claire Aquilina and Danica Bonello Spiteri.

They had an outstanding performance in the first race as Bonello and Mifsud were classified second and third overall besides claiming the top two spots in their respective categories.

Aquilina dominated the women’s time trial, finishing first overall with Bonello Spiteri behind. After a day’s rest, the riders lined up for the road race which featured no fewer than 2,300 metres of uphills.

The race covered two loops around Skyros island on undulating terrain with a three-kilometre incline that reached gradient peaks of 20 per cent.

The men’s race was the most fiercely-contested with a field of over 150 riders. Bonello and Mifsud stayed near the front of the peloton and it was in the first major hill that the race opened up.

The Greens duo charged up the hill, breaking away from the peloton. They opened a lead of over one minute on the main group as they persisted with their effort through the following lap.

Despite not being able to close the gap on another breakaway rider, Bonello and Mifsud fended off the chasing peloton, gaining an advantage of over four minutes towards the end.

There was no contestation for second place as by mutual agreement, Mifsud crossed the line just ahead of Bonello who was third overall and second in his category.

Aquilina was the outright winner of the women’s race covering the 110km distance in four hours and eight minutes. Bonello Spiteri had a tougher time as she was strongly challenged by a Greek rider, whom she overtook in the final hill of the day to gain second overall and first in her category.

“This was a great achievement for our club at a UCI World Tour race,” Bonello said.

“The road race was no easy task but we prepared hard for this event and the results here meant that our preparations bore the desired fruit.”

Team Greens have now qualified for the UCI World Championships to be held in Copenhagen in September. Team Greens’ next commitment will be the Granfondo dei Monti Lepini in Rome on June 7.
