I wholeheartedly agree with Gozo Bishop Mario Grech (The Sunday Times, July 1) in his warnings to our society about the dangers of contemporary false values, which are dragging our society downhill.

I am sure that if the Church in Malta and Gozo emphasises more strongly everyone’s duty to observe the Ten Commandments, we will be on the right path, and can halt this headlong downward trend.

Why does the Maltese Church no longer give due importance to the Ten Commandments? Are they old-fashioned? No; they could be our salvation in this day of broken marriages and divorce, adultery, stealing, drop in church attendance on Sunday, which should be a day of rest and prayer, false values, and false glib talk full of proud and thoughtless conceit. We are all sinners.

Our clergy should wake up, speak up, and preach the Gospel, not in fine abstruse words, but in simple language, for all to hear, listen to, understand, and heed. Hence the Ten Commandments.
