What a pleasant surprise after a long gap visiting Malta, to find that the quality of some wine is so high.

Red wines in the supermarket in the €14-20 range seem even of quality enough to compete with upper end South African, Australian and Californian wine that retails in the UK for up to double that.

Which begs the question of why it does not. A totally unjustified image of low-standard Mediterranean island plonk cannot be undone with zero marketing and a total lack of easy availability here in the UK. Forget mass market, Malta could have a solid export base of small growth high-end wines.

Then again I can’t blame you if you just want to keep it all and drink it yourselves.
