The European tournament for Under-14 players at the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC), sponsored by Kettle Chips, came to a close recently with the two finals in the categories for boys and girls.

The boys’ singles event was characterised by two youngsters determined to win the tour-nament.

Edoardo Graziani, of Switzerland, fought hard and won the first set against Russia’s Elisey Savenkov 6-4.

However, Graziani then lost most of his composure and Savenkov won the second set 6-3 to force a decider.

The third set was an all-out combat with Savenkov showing great talent and skill in the early stages.

In the end, however, his effort proved futile as a more focused Graziani emerged victorious 6-3 to claim the title.

The girls’ final was a less dramatic affair with lots of lobs from the baseline and the occasional groundshot winners from Donia Abdel-Aziz, of Great Britain, and Russian Kamilla Koleladze.

Abdel-Aziz won the contest fairly easily and in straight sets – 6-2 6-3.

Carlos Cluett, managing director and representative in Malta of Red October, the sponsors of the tournament, presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up.
