Graphic design student Lindsay Aquilina, who attends the Mcast Institute of Art and Design, won the first Malta Euro Design contest by Nescafé Dolce Gusto.

Her design placed in the first top 10 from among 252 local entries.

Ms Aquilina, 19, designed an organic pattern on the Dolce Gusto Melody coffee machine, which was inspired by objects made out of Maltese lace and silver filigree, insects, flowers and tribal totems.

Ms Aquilina will now be competing with 19 other countries at the European Championship in Milan on November 10. The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook (www.facebook.com/NESCAFÉDolceGustoMalta).

Two winners will be announced: the first will be the coffee machine with the most votes across Europe on Facebook; the second winner will be chosen by a jury. Both winning machines will be produced in limited edition in spring.
