A young man who lives in a house called Grand Prix has been fined €3,000 and banned from driving for a month for injuring a woman in a car crash three years ago.

Andrew Pace, 21, was driving carelessly when he moved out of his lane and left Anne Marie Gauci with a fractured and dislocated hip, the court ruled.

The accident took place on December 4 at about 3am as Ms Gauci, at the wheel of a Fiat Uno, was on the way to Dingli. She had just passed the roundabout in Attard when she spotted Mr Pace, in a Ford Fiesta, approaching at speed.

He was driving on her side of the road and as she tried to avoid him by steering to the right, the two cars collided on their passenger sides. Taking the witness stand, Ms Gauci said that her car came to rest facing the opposite direction.

She panicked after seeing a lot of blood and realised that she could not move. She phoned her parents and then lost consciousness.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri noted that Mr Pace did not testify, as was his right, and had hardly answered any questions from the police.

He found Ms Gauci’s version of events to be credible and plausible although he was not satisfied with the level of evidence regarding Mr Pace’s speed. He noted that the road was wet at the time after a short spell of rain.

Magistrate Camilleri found Mr Pace guilty of involuntarily causing serious injury to Ms Gauci, damaging her car and driving carelessly but not dangerously.
