The director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development yesterday posed a question to this year’s University graduates, asking whether they had given any thought to how they could translate what they had learnt into something creative and innovative.

Maria Attard pointed out that today’s graduates, particularly those specialised in the social sciences, benefit from a work environment that has far fewer barriers than there were only 10 or 20 years ago.

In just a few hours a young person could create a website, contribute information through smart phone apps and lead revolutions by social media.

Social sustainability and innovation would be the next big thing, and for this to happen society must realise that the role of social sciences, humanities and interdisciplinary research has a value that could be exchanged for creativity, innovation and growth, said Dr Attard.
