A 48-year-old mother from Xagħra is in a critical condition after being stabbed in the head with a screwdriver at her home.

The police yesterday said that the woman’s former partner, a 43-year-old foreign man, was being held in connection with the case.

Police, who were called at 7am yesterday, found Sylvia Zammit lying on a bed at her home in Triq Ġużeppi Grech. She is the mother of a 10-year-old boy.

Sources said the police had been alerted by the archpriest of Xagħra, after he received a call from the victim who begged him to save her life.

She was initially admitted to the Gozo General Hospital but was later transferred to Mater Dei Hospital by helicopter for further treatment.
