Gozo drew 2-2 with Moldova’s Ialoveni in their final Regions Cup match at the Gozo Stadium yesterday to finish a creditable second in the four-team table.

The Moldovans enjoyed the better start as Andrian Spinu fired them ahead on 29 minutes.

The Gozitans took time to respond to this early setback but they drew level 14 minutes into the second half thanks to Darco Stojanovic.

This goal lifted the hosts who took the lead four minutes later through John Camilleri.

However, Gozo’s hopes of winning the game were dashed on 74 minutes when Ialoveni skipper Vitalie Tonu hit home the equaliser.

The result moved Gozo to second in the group on four points, five behind group winners FC Olimp, from Russia, who yesterday clinched their third successive victory with a 4-0 rout of Latvian selection Rinuzi/Strong.

The Russians have secured a berth in the Regions Cup finals, to be played in June.

Gozo formation: A. Parnis, D. Farrugia, D.M. Udoh, A. Simoncic, P. Buttigieg, J.P. Mizzi (55 K. Mercieca), M. Buhagiar, M. Xerri, M. Bezzina, J. Camilleri. D. Stojanovic.

Standings: FC Olimp 9; Gozo 4; Ialoveni 2; Rinuzi/Strong 1.
